Job Description

The Character FX Supervisor oversees the technical pipeline and shot production for the cloth, muscle, hair, fur and feather simulation. Develops and support tools and technology needed to arrive at the desired visual style of the project. Will report to the Production Manager/Producer and guided by the Assets Division Supervisor.

Primary Responsibilities

The Character FX Supervisor manages the Char FX team.

Works closely with Production Management in the management of the department and to create the schedule, casting tasks and ensure quotas/deadlines are met.

Consults with Character Modeling and Rigging Sup, Art Director and Assets Div Sup (Char Shading/Grooming) - as to the technical feasibility of the elements in the designs of the groom, hair/fur, feathers and cloth; and suggests production friendly solutions that will maintain the vision of the film.

Serves as a technical adviser to the Assets Division Supervisor, the Shading Supervisor, the Shading Lead and the Lighting/Comp Division Supervisor in the Look Development stage of groom for the characters.

Provides technical input and support for all shots/sequences being handled by his/her team. As well as, working closely with other supervisors/leads to communicate any Character FX needs and requirements. This includes the Animation, Char Modeling and Rigging Departments.

Collaborates with R&D, Production Engineering and Production Management to improve and evolve the production pipeline and methodologies.

Builds strong communication and sense of “team” within their department. Promotes a positive team environment. Provides training and mentorship of team - with the goal to grow artists to senior and lead level.

Conducts daily rounds with each artist, to follow the planning, provide technical planning and to reinforce visual continuity. Provides a “briefing or kickoff” for team prior to their starting on shots). Decides when shots/sequences are ready for review and then, prepares each review. Ensure department delivers accurate work.

Position Requirements

  • Minimum of 5-7 years Character FX experience working within a CG Animation Feature production pipeline.
  • Extensive experience as a lead or supervising artist.
  • Possesses an excellent understanding asset tracking and mgmt tools.
  • Expert knowledge creating CG CharFX in Maya.
  • Experience with Arnold, a huge plus.
  • Expert knowledge of dynamic skinning, cloth simulations, Yeti, Maya Fur, and Yeti.
  • Python, MEL and C/C++ programming experience.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Bachelors and/or Masters Degree in Computer Science, or related field, or comparable job experience.
